Burgos battles to Draw with Amidu

SACRAMENTO, CA – Former two time world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos and Yakubu Amidu battled to a hotly contested split draw that headlined ESPN’s Friday Night Fights at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort

The show was promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing.

Amidu had a solid round three as he backed up Burgos with some right hands. Burgos landed a nice uppercut in round four but Amidu came back in round five with a hard over had right that had Burgos stumbling in the corner. In round six, Amidu landed a nice four punch combination that was capped off by a nice uppercut.

Burgos started to show some consistency in round seven and started to move his hands again in round eight. In round nine the two went toe to toe with Amidu landing hard shots on the ropes while Burgos was trying to land big left hooks. Burgos landed two solid right hands to punctuate round ten. Burgos had a big round eleven as he landed several smashing right hands that brought the crowd to their feet. The twelfth was more of the same as the two battled to the bell at the end of the twelfth round.

Each fighter took a scorecard by a 116-112 tally while a third card read even at 114-114.

Burgos of Tijuana, Mexico threw a CompuBox record 1206 punches battles two his 2nd consecutive draw (He fought a draw with WBO Jr. Lightweight champion Roman Martinez in January) is now 30-1-2. Amidu of Los Angeles via Ghana is now 20-4-2.

Miguel Gonzales scored an eighth round stoppage over Josenilson Dos Santos in a scheduled ten round Lightweight bout.

Gonzalez started getting to Dos Santos with hard shots in round’s three and four. Later in the round Dos Santos was doked a point for holding. Dos Santos had a strong round five as he landed a nice combination on the ropes. The two continued to grind under the hot Sacramento sun until in round eight when Gonzalez landed a couple of body shots that made Dos Santos retreat to the corner and was blasted down with one more shot and the fight was over at 2:27 of round eight.

Gonzalez of Cleveland, Ohio called out undefeated Lightweight Terrance Crawford after the bout. Gonzalez is now 22-3 with 16 knockouts. Dos Santos of Brazil is now 26-2.
